Why a yearly service can reduce the cost of running your heating and cooling system

We all know the benefits of keeping up to date with servicing our cars. After all, a quick fix on a wearing part now can save you thousands if that part were to break and impact the whole mechanical system.

Your heating and cooling system is no different. It requires a regular service to keep it in optimal condition, and make sure it’s not costing you money needlessly in the future.

Here are 5 reasons to service your heating and cooling system every year…

  1. Detect small issues before they become big problems
When a part in your heating and cooling system is approaching end of life, replacing it isn’t expensive.

However, letting that part continue to wear down puts unnecessary strain on your entire system. By the time it eventually breaks, it may have caused irreparable damage to other parts which then also need to be replaced. In some cases, this may include the whole main unit which will set you back thousands of dollars.

Booking in for a service each year means a professional can check all of the parts to make sure they are in good working order. Where they’re not, they can be quickly and easily replaced for a small fee – which saves you big money in the long run.
  1. Your system will run more efficiently which reduces cost
Any heating and cooling system that has not been serviced for a long time is not running as efficiently as it can be. Dirt and dust build up, and this impacts your comfort as well as making the system work harder…which ultimately means it costs more to run.

During a yearly service, a professional will look for anything that could impact your system’s performance and address it immediately.
  1. Maintenance can keep your warranty active
Some heating and cooling system manufacturers place a clause in their warranty that the system must be serviced each year for the warranty to remain valid.

When a warranty could last up to 5 years, it’s a small price to pay to book in for an annual service to give you peace of mind that the system will be fixed or replaced for free if it breaks.
  1. Maintenance increases the lifespan of your system
The lifespan of your heating and cooling system depends on the type of system you have. Some systems last between 7 and 10 years – others for more than 20 years.

We generally find that the heating and cooling systems which last the longest are those that have been maintained well.
  1. Keeps you comfortable when you most need it
Cars always seem to break down at the most inconvenient times – like when you’re late for work or have an important event to get to.

The same can happen with a heating and cooling system that is not maintained well. You’ll often find it breaks down at the worst time, like right before a 35 degree day or a freezing cold night!

Regular maintenance significantly reduces the chance of this happening to you, so you can rest assured that your system will be there for you when you need it most.

It’s easy to book in for a service of your heating and cooling system. Simply send us a message and say you need a service, and we’ll contact you to provide a quote and organise a time.

How to change from gas to reverse cycle heating and cooling

Gas has been a traditional favourite for home heating in the ACT. While gas wall heaters and ducted gas heating systems have served us well, many home owners are now finding the cost of gas prohibitive.

Not being able to link gas to a solar energy system is another reason why home owners are increasingly choosing to switch from gas to electricity-powered reverse cycle systems. Having heating and cooling as part of your solar can significantly reduce running costs – making it easier to get the most out of your system in our hottest and coldest months.

Changing from gas to reverse cycle may not be as difficult or as costly as you think.

Here’s an overview of how the process works…

  1. Provide a free quote

We will organise a time to visit you at home to examine your existing heating and cooling system and measure the space for a new one.

We’ll also ask if you have any special preferences for how the new system is installed – such as whether you want specific zones set up so you can heat or cool areas of your home independently of others.

Once we have a full understanding of what needs to be done, we will create a quote and send it to you.

  1. Cap off gas fittings

If you accept our quote, we’ll arrange a time to complete the installation. Depending on the size and complexity involved, installation can take up to a few days.

The first step is to switch off your gas system, which we do by capping off all the gas fittings. We can also remove and dispose of your old gas wall heaters if you wish.

  1. Install the new unit

Refrigerated heating and cooling requires a main unit which is usually installed outdoors (though it can be indoors if you have an appropriate space).

We’ll deliver and hook up this unit, and install the internal control panel at a convenient place in the home.

  1. Run all the ducting throughout the home

The most time consuming part of the installation process is configuring and laying all the ducting that delivers the heating and cooling throughout your house.

We also need to install air vents in each room, as well as a main air filter panel which cleans the air and traps dust and dirt (this filter needs to be maintained at least once per year).

  1. Show you how to use the system

Once installation is complete, we’ll walk you through how to use your new reverse cycle heating and cooling system – including any features such as zones, timers, and so on.

We’ll also provide all the instructional and warranty documentation supplied by the manufacturer.

From here there is nothing left to do but enjoy your new heating and cooling system! We recommend booking in for a maintenance service after 2 years, and then once a year after that (to keep it running optimally).

How to upgrade your air conditioning with a $15,000 interest-free loan from ACT Government

Living comfortably through Canberra’s hot summers and frosty winters makes quality heating and cooling essential for every home.

Unfortunately, the cost of upgrading an ageing air conditioning system is a barrier for many people.

With this and the territory’s sustainable future goals in mind, the ACT Government recently announced details of a new scheme. Launched in June 2021, the Sustainable Household Scheme is a $150 million dollar initiative that allows Canberra residents to apply for an interest-free loan between $2,000 and $15,000 to be repaid over 10 years.

The scheme will run until 2026, and enable Canberrans to apply for a loan to cover the cost of installing:

  • electric heating and cooling systems
  • hot water heat pumps
  • rooftop solar panels
  • household battery storage systems
  • electric stove tops

Electric vehicles are also set to become part of the scheme in the future.

How to apply for the loan

Up to $15,000 is available per household, and you can use this for one or a combination of installations (such as a new heating and cooling system and a new hot water heater).

The eligibility criteria is relatively straight-forward, with key criteria being that the home must be in the ACT and the property must have an unimproved land value under $750,000 (or $200,000 for apartments).

To apply, you need to:

  • Attend a free live online workshop which explains the scheme
  • Decide which systems you want to upgrade or install
  • Contact an approved supplier for a quote
  • Complete a loan application through ACT Government
  • Get your system installed

There are no establishment or account-keeping costs, and the loan repayments start after the installation is complete (repaid monthly). You can also repay the full amount at any time without cancellation fees.

Delta Air is an approved supplier

We believe this a great initiative from the ACT Government. It will help the many families who suffer with expensive heating and cooling systems to finally secure the upgrade needed to reduce running costs.

Rather than waiting until the system breaks, or continuing to pay excessive energy bills to run an inefficient system, households can make use of the scheme and reap the return while they pay off the loan.

As an approved provider under the scheme, you can contact us anytime for a free quote to upgrade your heating and cooling system.

This is the perfect time to install a new air conditioning system before the worst of the weather arrives. To organise a free quote, simply call 02 6280 4211 or click to contact us.
